Why Lesotho developed an Investor Map
The Lesotho SDG Investor Map is a public market-intelligence resource developed by UNDP with the Government of Lesotho. It translates national development needs and policy priorities into investment opportunity areas that can be examined by domestic and international investors.
The publication responds to a financing challenge shared by many developing economies: public resources alone are not sufficient to meet the Sustainable Development Goals. Its purpose is to support better alignment between private investment, national planning and opportunities with credible market and development relevance.
From country evidence to opportunity areas
The report follows an eight-step UNDP methodology. It begins with secondary research on national development needs and the investment landscape, then uses sector analysis and stakeholder interviews to identify and test potential opportunity areas. Market momentum, policy impetus, development need and investor relevance are considered together.
The research process distinguishes prioritised opportunities from emerging and deferred areas. This matters because a strong development need does not automatically make an opportunity market-ready. The report preserves those distinctions and explains the policy, market, impact and risk context for each selected area.
Five sectors, twelve prioritised opportunities
The map covers agriculture and food, manufacturing and consumer goods, finance, healthcare, and renewable resources and alternative energy. Across these five sectors it identifies twelve market-ready opportunity areas, supported by sector overviews, development needs, policy priorities, business models and risk considerations.
A validation workshop involved 120 industry actors from government, business, investors, associations, development partners, community organisations, unions, non-governmental organisations and incubators. The figure records the breadth of validation participation, not investment raised or projects financed.
Analytica's contribution to the publication
Analytica served as economic and financial consultant. The team contributed market and sector research, value-chain analysis, stakeholder interviews, investment-opportunity assessment, participatory validation and data visualisation within the UNDP Investor Map method.
